Job Description

The Shariah Audit officer shall cover the Shariah Audit of the overall Shariah Compliant business activities and operations of the Bank according to the established Shariah criteria to provide an independent assessment and objective of the Bank’s Shariah-compliant business activities, with the main objective of ensuring a sound and effective internal control system for Shariah compliance. The purpose of Shariah Audit is to ensure that the Management of the Bank discharges its responsibilities in relation to the implementation of the Shariah rules and principles as determined by the Bank’s Shariah Board.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Providing an independent assessment and objective assurance process that involves obtaining sufficient and reliable evidences to establish whether the Bank’s activities and operations are in accordance with Shariah rules and principles and recommending rectifications and/or improvements thereof.
  2. Providing assurance, in the form of an opinion to the board, management and Shariah Board in respect of adherence of AUB with the Shariah principles, fatwas, rulings and guidance issued by the Shariah Board. 
  3. Providing assurance, to the management and Shariah Board in respect of AUB Shariah governance structure and its proper functioning in line with Shariah principles, fatwas, rulings and guidance issued by the Shariah Board and relevant governance requirements.
  4. Providing assurance that an adequate internal Shariah control system has been designed and implemented by AUB management in line with Shariah principles and rules and ascertaining that the system provides reasonable assurance of the Shariah compliant business activities of the Bank are effective and efficient in meeting the objectives of Shariah compliance, so as to ensure that the goals and objectives for Shariah compliance are achieved within branches and operating units of the Bank.
  5. Providing assurance that the management has established adequate risk assessment criteria and management mechanism to ensure compliance with Shariah principles and rules.
  6. Providing assurance regarding validity, completeness and timeliness based on the documentary evidence in relation to Shariah compliance requirements.
  7. Providing assurance regarding adequacy, completeness and reliability of information technology applications and systems in relation to Shariah compliance requirements.
  8. Developing and preparing the Shariah Audit annual and periodic assessment plans.
  9. Developing and preparing the Shariah Audit annual and periodic programs for every assessment and examination;
  10. Conducting Shariah Audit for all Shariah products to ensure compliance against the applicable Shariah requirements.
  11. Conducting Shariah Audit of all activates and operations of off-site and on-site of the Bank;
  12. Conducting annual Shariah Audit for branches, businesses, profit distribution channels, AUB Shariah Business Overseas & placements to ensure compliance with the applicable Shariah requirements, and submitting the draft report to the audit committee and Shari’ah bord;
  13. Conducting Shariah Audit of key business areas on a sample and test check basis;
  14. Collecting, analyzing, interpreting and documenting information related to Shariah Audit objectives to support their Shariah Audit opinion.
  15. Follow up with corrective action(s) and recommendation(s) so as to ensure that the gap/breach is rectified and to prevent the recurrence of future non-compliance;
  16. Checking proper application of Islamic commercial contracts’ concepts and principles in contracts and agreements as well as product features and mechanisms;
  17. Promoting internal accountability and transparency, and helps gain the confidence of all stakeholder of the Bank.
  18. Maintain good working relationship with all key parties including Shariah Board and Shariah Compliance Departments.
  19. Helps to enhance competency of the Shariah Audit function by staying abreast with the latest development as well as identifying training/development needs and address them accordingly.
  20. The Internal Shari’ah Audit Unit reports functionally to the Board Audit Committee and the Shari’ah Board (SB). For administrative matters, the unit reports to the Chief Internal Auditor.
  21. The Internal Shariah audit reports shall be shared with the relevant stakeholders of the Bank including the CEO, Chief Internal Auditor, the Audit Committee of BoS and Shari’ah Board.
  22. Any additional tasks and responsibilities assigned by the line manager.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor or Master in Shariah (Islamic Law) or Islamic Banking and Finance, Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul- al-Fiqh) or (Fiqh), Islamic Transaction/ Commercial Law (Fiqh ul Mu’amalat);
  • Having professional qualification preferably AAOIFI (CSAA or CSA) professional qualification in Shariah & Audit, internal audit and / or Shariah audit.
  • Minimum 2 to 3 years’ experience preferably in Shariah Audit, Review and Shariah Compliance;
  • Strong knowledge of Shariah & Law or Fiqh ul Mu’amalat and knowledge of banking industry.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, auditing, analytical thinking, report writing and negotiation skills. 
  • Proficiency in local languages and English.
  • Knowledge of Islamic financing industry,
  • Familiar with AAOIFI Audit and Shariah standard.
  • Experience in Islamic Banking and Finance.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Able to travel to provinces
